Abstract

The capstone of the "Turtles, or Crystals" corpus. Parts One–Three built a bridge from an engineered
substrate (a topological crystal memory) and from biology toward the same wall: open-ended evolution.
This paper reports what the two arches meet at. The crystal has a command line and no observer — it
integrates priors passively, cannot lie, and cannot grow. The organism has an observer — it can grow, it
can lie, and it cannot audit itself, because the ego that reads the data is the bias in the reading.
The mechanical keystone is stated as control theory rather than philosophy, and is true of machines: a
reference-tracking loop cannot audit its own corrupted setpoint from inside. In simulation (40 seeds, six
corruption sizes, four gain sets, plus a referee-grade system-identification adversary) every in-loop
attack failed and the loop defended the fiction; only an exterior reference, anchored differently,
corrected it — and an edge map shows the wall is not noise, gain, or corruption size, but the binary
presence or absence of that exterior reference. The paper carries seven losable predictions with fixed
kill conditions, declares four model overlays as departures from established science, retracts its own
prior overclaim (the good-regulator theorem is cited as lineage and does not establish the keystone),
keeps its marked doors shut, and reports its nulls. The conclusion is one sentence: the cure for a
poisoned prior is never solitude and never the crowd — it is a chosen, trusted, exterior hammer, and the
courage to hand it over. Read backwards, the same facts are a construction specification for building
minds and institutions that can correct themselves. We claim the bridge, not the destination.
